The showcase will be held on September 15th, 2018 in El Paso, Texas.

Femme Frontera is a collective of six women filmmakers from the U.S.-Mexico border region. We advocate for the amplification of films made by female filmmakers from our region as well as from around the world. We celebrate these unique voices through showcasing work locally and nationally and educational initiatives.

The first Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase premiered on August 1st, 2016 at Alamo Drafthouse in El Paso, Texas and sold out a few days prior to the event. Since then, the 2016 and 2017 Showcases have gone on to screen at these locations:
Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles, CA, Relativity School in Los Angeles, CA, Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX, Indie Grits Film Festival in Columbia, SC, UWM in Milwaukee, WI, 516 ARTS in Albuquerque, NM, Cine Las Americas in Austin, TX, San Diego, CA, Art Theater in Champaign, IL, and Cine Festival in San Antonio, TX.

In 2017, Femme Frontera received national media attention featured in Variety Magazine, Remezcla, and Texas Monthly magazine, among others. The Showcase, as reviewed by the Indie Grits Film Festival, has been described as "Resisting stereotypical, hyper masculine depictions of the Latina experience that so often reduce characters of color to the status of flimsy cardboard cutouts, the directors of Femme Frontera prioritize feeling and style ahead of plot, cultivating tactile emotional realities onscreen that address–in part–the illogic behind man-made walls."

For the 3rd Annual Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase, the theme for 2018 is empowerment through the female perspective. We are looking for stories of hope, perseverance, and resistance. Though priority will be given to filmmakers who were born, live, and/or created their short films in El Paso, TX, Las Cruces, NM, Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and their surrounding communities, FFFS welcomes short film submissions made by women from around the world.

Open to shorts under 20 minutes long.
The theme for 2018 is “Storytelling: Empowering the Female Perspective”. We are looking for stories of hope, perseverance, and resistance. Projects must be directed by female, or those who identify as female, filmmakers. All genres accepted. We accept shorts made by women that empower and give voice to women, immigrants, minorities, the LBGTQ community, and most especially stories that take place on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Submissions are now open.
